GPS Mapping for Event Management

Many events can benefit from GPS mapping to improve safety, security & participant knowledge.  Organizers that use GPS mapping as part of their event management portray themselves as well prepared and more professional.

The most common events would include runs, walks and competitive racing.

For competitive events, accuracy in length of routes is a factor.  GPS mapping can ensure that route lengths meet accuracy standards.

GPS mapping waypoints assists in organization and managing for the best event outcomes.  Points of interest may be:

  • Staging, start and finish points
  • Medical and first aid locations
  • Location of event officials
  • Communications locations
  • Support stations for participants
  • Key waypoints along the route for participant recognition

Events often are multijurisdictional.  Knowing which response jurisdiction is responsible is important to coordinating emergency services.

Police and EMS organizations rely on the maps for planning and assignment of units.  Having maps makes their participation easier to obtain.

Ground crews responsible for event route markers, signs, barricades and other materials can use the mapping for planning and management.

Volunteers are more effectively involved if they are provided mapping materials that show their locations and functions.  This enhances briefing outcomes.

Participants can preview GPS mapped routes and use that information for event preparation, training and record of accomplishment.
