WHAT RAILROAD INFORMATION IS PLOTTED ON A MAP

CTA physically inspects the right-of-way with a knowledgeable railroad employee, locates and assigns a GPS generated latitude/longitude address to the following:

  • Mileposts, bridges, tunnels and ROW structures
  • 911 jurisdictional boundaries
  • Public roads, streets or highways that intersect
  • US DOT grade crossing identification numbers
  • Public “place names” (found on common maps)
  • Railroad “place names” (known by the railroad)
  • Major underground or overhead utilities on ROW

This information is then plotted and depicted on local area maps that show the adjoining roadway system.  Using this information, emergency responders can locate and plan in advance the best roadway access to the railroad’s property.

WHY IS RAILROAD – 911 COMMUNICATION INTEROPERABILITY IMPORTANT?
  • It can save lives
  • It helps protect company property
