Grade Crossing Inventory

Clear Track Ahead can verify and update the grade crossing inventory.

Both the Code of Federal Regulations and the Rail Safety Improvement Act (2008) require an inventory of railroad grade crossings be periodically verified and furnished to the Federal Railroad Administration - FRA.

Each crossing has a unique identification number (six digits, one alpha). Each crossing is required to have a standardized posting.  Generally the railroad using and maintaining the track involved is responsible for verification and posting.

The Posting is to be on a plaque, secured to a post or signal mast at the rail crossing, visible and containing the following information:

  • The name of the current operating railroad
  • The railroad milepost location (and prefix line designator)
  • The unique US DOT identification number, six digit, single alpha
  • A working telephone number to report emergencies or malfunctions
  •

The grade crossing postings can be inaccurate

    Reason's:

  • Mergers, sales or leases
  • Failure to update plaques
  • Posting information is dated or obsolete
  • New information is not filed with the FRA
  • The posting structure is damaged or moved
